Induction of labour

When natural labour starts, usually between 37 and 42 weeks, the labour hormone, oxytocin, starts circulating in your body and oxytocin receptors are activated in your uterus. The cervix (neck of the womb) softens and shortens, the fluid-filled membrane sac surrounding your baby tears (’your waters break’). the cervix dilates (opens) and the womb contracts to push your baby out. This is a complex system of hormones which our bodies are programmed to commence naturally once your baby is ready to be born.
